Mercato Lyonnais between regrets sanctions and future prospects

Olympique Lyonnais finished the mercato with a few regrets, including the impossibility of recruiting a second attacker crucial to complete the squad and bringing back a player from Manchester City as planned. Despite promising preliminary discussions, the lack of a contractual clause and the priorities of other clubs made these transfers complex. OL management remains optimistic about the possibility of future collaborations with these clubs, highlighting strong relationships and the ability to find solutions through these links.

The tension also manifested itself with the suspension of Antonio Ferreiraa, the goaltender coach, for a firm suspension match and a suspended match. This sanction, decided by the LFP’s disciplinary commission following a behaviour during the OL-OM match, will prevent him from going to Rennes on 14 September. This punishment comes in a context in which OL, after approaching the relegation, seems to have succeeded in a rapid reconstruction and is projecting with optimism towards the 2025-2026 season.

At the same time, OL loses a promising player, Malick Fofana, who attracted the attention of Inter Milan for the winter mercato. Despite an initial planned start, the player refused to join Everton, encouraging OL to consider leaving Georges Mikautadze to strengthen his finances. The departure of Mikautadze, who has earned more than 30 million euros, is regretted by Captain Corentin Tolisso, who believes he had the potential for an exceptional season. Finally, Mathieu Patouillet left OL for Saudi Arabia, where the mercato was still open, after having received little demand because of the competition for the post of guard.
