Concarneau asserts himself at the National with ambition and experience

The Concarneau Sports Union, founded in 1911, was the second club in Finistère. After a notable rise in Ligue 2 in 2023, Concarnau’s players, nicknamed the Thoniers, found the National after a year. While in Ligue 2, the team had to play home matches in several nearby cities such as Brest, Lorient, Guingamp and Rennes, due to the non-compliance of their Guy Piriou stadium with league standards. Work has since begun, allowing Concarnau to play now at the National, where he finished in 8th place last season. The team was distinguished by an attack among the best in the championship, but also had one of the weakest defenses.

Historically, the US Concarneau has made a difference thanks to its remarkable performances in the Coupe de France, regularly reaching the first laps, and even the 1/4 final in 2015. The team prepared for the new season with the return to training on July 1, after an important renewal phase. Several key players left the club, including Mouazan, Etuin and Salles. However, the team retained part of its previous season’s workforce, which was an advantage over last season. The recruitment manager, Philippe Leclerc, favoured the experience and training of players during this recruitment phase.

The US Concarneau’s preparation program includes several friendly games before the start of the National 1 Championship, which will begin on August 8. The first of these matches will take place against Stade Brestois, followed by matches against Laval (L2), Guingamp (L2), Caen (N1) and Guingamp B (N3). The club hopes to continue its development in National, building on a balanced workforce and experience gained in previous seasons. Ligue 1 or Ligue 2 player loans could complement recruitment to strengthen the team.
