AS Saint-Étienne: Sustainable mobility and ecological commitment at the heart of its strategy

The AS Saint-Étienne once again demonstrates its commitment to environmental protection by integrating the Mob’Sport program, a government initiative aimed at promoting sustainable modes of transport for supporters and reducing the club’s carbon footprint. Recognized for its pioneering role in ecological approaches in French football, the Forezian club is now engaged in a pilot approach, supported by the Ligue de Football Professionnel within the framework of the Certificates d’Économies d’Énergie, which aims to transform the way supporters go to sporting events. This initiative is all the more crucial given that transportation accounts for 89% of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium matches, significantly exceeding the national average.

In order to remedy this situation, individual feasibility studies will soon be funded, exploring innovative solutions such as the development of public transport, shuttles, carpooling incentives and secure cycling around the stadium. The AS Saint-Étienne intends to make the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium a model of ecological accessibility, as part of a long-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. The club has already distinguished itself by publishing a complete carbon balance in 2021 and by joining the UN’s Sports For Climate Action programme, demonstrating a strong commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

By joining Mob’Sport alongside other pilot clubs, AS Saint-Étienne aspires to positively influence the entire French professional football landscape. The outcome of this experimental phase will lead to the publication of a good practice guide to encourage the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions by all clubs. This approach highlights the club’s commitment to combining sport performance and environmental responsibility, illustrating that its commitment goes beyond the mere framework of a slogan.
