Renais: a mercato of renewed and affirmed strategy

The summer mercato of Stade Rennais was particularly active, marking a significant transition under the direction of Loïc Désiré, new sports director. Desired has taken on the arduous task of correcting past casting errors, leading to a massive departure of players, including Henrk Meister, Kyogo Furuhasi and Kazeem Olaigbe, either by final loans or by loans to other clubs such as the Genoa, Vasco de Gama or Monpellier. In addition, players whose contracts expired or were not titularized, such as Steve Mandanda and Godfrey Lembe, also left the club. This wave of departures freed space in the changing rooms and generated significant revenues, estimated at €96 million in sales for €67.75 million spent.

In parallel with these departures, Stade Rennais has put in place a more targeted recruitment strategy, focusing on players familiar with Ligue 1. The arrival of Quentin Merlin and Przemyslaw Frankowski reinforces the corridors, while Valentin Rongier and Mahdid Camara bring experience and quality to the midfield. The attack was completed by Estebán Lepaul and Breel Embolo, two experienced players able to make a difference. These reinforcements are part of the continuity of Habib Beye’s vision, which quickly named Valentin Rongier captain, demonstrating the confidence given to these newcomers.

Although the mercato was generally positive, with a favourable financial balance, some observers regret a lack of creative input on the team. The first game in 11-11 at Angers revealed difficulties, stressing the need for coach Habib Beye to continue developing the team and confirm the club’s ambitions in more favorable conditions. The month of September will be crucial in assessing the intentions and ambitions of Stade Rennais, particularly as regards the potential reinforcements and the ability of the team to stay in the race for European objectives.
