OM-PSG postponed security and timing

The classic OM-PSG match, initially scheduled for Sunday evening at the Velodrome Stadium, was postponed until Monday 8pm due to weather conditions deemed dangerous by the Prefect of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. This decision, taken by Georges-François Leclerc, was intended to guarantee public safety in the face of a risk of thunderstorms and torrential rains, the Bouches-du-Rhône department being placed in orange vigilance by Météo France. Although this measure was deemed necessary by the authorities, it was not enthusiastically received by the players of both clubs, who would have preferred to maintain the game on Sunday. The report had consequences for Paris Saint-Germain, which will be played at the same time as the Ballon d’Or ceremony, and for Olympique de Marseille, whose calendar was already busy with important deadlines in the championship and in the Champions League.

This postponement decision follows an incident involving Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal, who had been expelled during the Champions League match against OM. After acknowledging his public mistake, Carvajal apologized for his head-on gesture against the Marseille guard Geronimo Rulli. The incident had briefly revived the hope of the Marseille supporters, but did not prevent Real Madrid from winning on the ground. Rulli himself relativized the incident, stressing that Carvajal immediately understood the seriousness of his gesture.

The postponement of the OM-PSG match has important implications for both clubs. For OM, this reprogramming is in line with their expectations, given an already well-filled schedule. For the PSG, it is less favourable because it takes place at the same time as the delivery of the Ballon d’Or. The incident involving Carvajal, although regrettable, remains a significant moment for OM, for it briefly gave hope to Marseille supporters. The player will be suspended for the next match of Champions League, a hard blow for the Madrid team.
