Lyon aims to strengthen its attack with financial prudence

Olympique Lyonnais is preparing for a new Ligue 1 season with a significantly redesigned team since John Textor left. The Lyon attack, now led by Georges Mikautadze after Alexandre Lacazette’s departure to Saudi Arabia, seeks to find more depth. Although Mikautadze is comfortable as number 9, OL is actively exploring options to strengthen its offensive sector. Interest was expressed in Timo Werner, the 29-year-old German striker currently in RB Leipzig, who would have been proposed to the club. OL, while interested in Werner, would prefer to wait until the end of the mercato to try a negotiation, due to financial constraints and the high salary of the player.

The potential arrival of Timo Werner is part of OL’s prudent recruitment strategy, which seeks to reconcile ambition and financial management. The club managed to secure market opportunities while retaining part of its workforce. Werner’s interest is motivated by the good relations between the new managing director Michael Gerlinger and Red Bull, the owner of RB Leipzig. However, the monthly salary of €900,000 represents a major challenge for OL, which has adopted a more modest recruitment policy since its administrative relegation.

Along with the search for offensive reinforcement, OL announced Adam Karabec’s signature as a loan. The 22-year-old right winger will bear the number seven, a figure historically worn by players like Jordan Verevous and Amin Sarr. Karabec will have to fight to win and re-emphasize the coat of arms of this iconic issue. The Lyon team is therefore preparing to face the recovery of Ligue 1 with a mixture of continuity and renewal, hoping that these new recruits will contribute to achieving the goals set for the 2025-2026 season.
