Lens bets on Rise a promising guardian talent

RC Lens made a wise recruitment by offering Robin Risser for 3 million euros in July. This 20-year goaltender, trained in Strasbourg, quickly established himself as one of the revelations of Ligue 1, confirming the bold bet of his coach, Jean-Louis Leca. After a notable season on loan at the Red Star, Risser conquered the position of incumbent in Lens. His promising debut against Lyon, his decisive performance at Le Havre, and his excellent match in the derby against the LOSC convinced Pierre Sage and his teammates of his potential.

At the same time, the RC Strasbourg preferred a different approach by welcoming Mike Penders on loan from Chelsea. This 20-year-old Belgian goaltender, recruited by the Blues for 20 million euros last summer, was supposed to bring his experience of the Jupiler Pro League acquired with Gênk (21 games last season). However, his first appearances in Alsace did not match Djordje Petrovic, who had impressed Ligue 1 the previous season. Penders does not yet demonstrate the same level of serenity and assurance as his Lens counterpart.

The calm and maturity of Robin Risser is particularly appreciated in Lens, where Jonathan Gradit already highlights the added value he represents for the club. It is possible that the Racing Club in Strasbourg regretted to have let its young talent go for a modest amount of 3 million euros, while Lens is already celebrating a promising investment that could prove very profitable in the long term.
