LFP-DAZN Litigation: Broken Contract and Major Financial Issues

The Professional Football League (LFP) and the British broadcaster DAZN are currently engaged in a significant legal dispute, following the LFP’s decision to break the contract between them. Although both entities are contractually required to comply with an agreement valid until 2029, and despite the mediation efforts initiated by the Paris Economic Tribunal, DAZN formally rejected the terms of the breach proposed by the LFP. This impasse is all the more paradoxical because DAZN, who had requested this mediation, now refuses the offer of amicable resolution, suggesting a prolonged and potentially costly conflict.

The reasons for this disagreement persist, and according to sources close to the FPA, DAZN appears to seek substantial financial compensation. The British broadcaster would now claim EUR 573 million, invoking a “observed lack” and a “trompery on the goods” from the LFP. This high amount, combined with DAZN’s refusal to meet the financial deadlines of EUR 140 million due to the League for 30 April and 30 June, increases the complexity of the situation and suggests an escalation of the conflict.

Despite attempts at conciliation, the absence of a mutually acceptable agreement between the LFP and DAZN suggests that the breach of the contract is likely to be difficult and likely to initiate legal proceedings. The presidents of Ligue 1 clubs voted in favour of this breakup, stressing the LFP’s willingness to break away from this conflicting partnership. The future of Ligue 1 broadcasting remains uncertain, and the outcome of this case may have a significant impact on the French professional football landscape.
