After a disappointing 2022-2023 season with Olympique de Marseille, Luis Suárez is about to write a new chapter in his football career by joining Sporting Portugal. The Lisbon club, recently qualified for the Champions League, considers Suárez as the ideal replacement for Viktor Gyökeres, which was sold to Arsenal for a sum of about 63.5 million euros, plus 10 million euros of bonuses. This decision reflects the Sporting’s willingness to strengthen its attack with a player with high potential, after Gyökeres’ departure.
Suárez’s recent performance in Segunda División with Almería was particularly impressive. He scored 27 goals and delivered 8 assists, which enabled him to regain confidence and attract the attention of Sporting. Although the Olympique de Marseille initially invested about 10 million euros to recruit him, Suárez had only scored 3 goals in 7 games with the French club before being loaned to Almería. His visit to Marseilles was therefore brief and inconclusive, but he was able to bounce back in Spain.
The agreement between Sporting Portugal and Luis Suárez is expected to be imminent, with a five-year contract with a release clause of over €80 million. This recruitment represents an ambitious bet for Sporting, which relies on an underestimated player but in full physical and mental form. The integration of Suárez could be done quickly, potentially during the Portuguese Supercut against Benfica, scheduled for 31 July, thus providing an ideal opportunity to mark the minds and turn the page of his Marseille experience.
