The reform of the format of the Champions League generated strong reactions among LOSC fans throughout the season. However, it would appear that this new formula could be modified soon. According to Bild, a German sports media, three changes are currently under consideration by UEFA.
The first change envisaged is the removal of extensions during the final phase of the competition. Thus, as in the Coupe de France, the teams would directly play a shoot-out in case of equality at the end of the regulatory time.
The second potential change concerns the allocation of the advantage of the field to the top eight teams (Top 8) during the league phase. Currently, this advantage is granted only for the eighth finals. If this reform were adopted, it would be extended to the semifinals, allowing teams like Arsenal or FC Barcelona to welcome their opponent back.
Finally, the third proposed amendment aims to prevent two teams from the same country from meeting during the dams or the eighth of the finals. This rule was already in force in the old format of the competition and would thus avoid internal confrontations such as those between Paris Saint-Germain and the Stade Brestois, or between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.
It should be noted that Rรฉmy Cabella was rather satisfied with the new format during an interview with Zack Nani last February. He particularly appreciated the increase in the number of matches and the presence of more “piment” in the competition. However, some changes may be made to further improve this flagship European football competition.
