Greenwood favours Europe in the face of a shimmering Saudi offer

Following weeks of speculation about his future, Mason Greenwood would have taken a position on his next destination. According to information disclosed by the specialised media Fichajes, the English player now favours a continuation in Europe, thus excluding a possible destination in Saudi Arabia, where several clubs, including Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad, supported by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), had expressed a sustained interest. Although a substantial offer, estimated at €90 million, has been envisaged to secure its services, Greenwood seems resolutely turned to a new challenge within the Old Continent.

The interest of Saudi clubs, and in particular this fiery offer, could nevertheless complicate the situation and alter Greenwood’s outlook. The Olympique de Marseille, the holder of its rights, would find itself faced with an attractive financial proposal, although the prior agreement concluded with Manchester United at the time of the loan limits the share of OM to half the amount of the transfer, i.e. EUR 45 million. FC Barcelona, previously considered to be a serious contender, sees its interest potentially overshadowed by this Saudi offer, while the Marseille management is attentive, aware that Greenwood’s recent performances have not met expectations.

The future of Mason Greenwood therefore looks uncertain, as the upcoming summer market can quickly decide this matter. Although OM is generally reluctant to separate from its most promising players, an offer of this magnitude may prove difficult to refuse, despite the loss of a potentially decisive element. The impact of this situation on Roberto De Zerbi’s sports project and the development of the Marseille team remain to be observed carefully in the coming weeks.
