The Olympique de Marseille (OM) focused on consolidating its staff during the summer mercato, a strategy favoured by coach Roberto De Zerbi. In an interview with The Team, De Zerbi stressed the importance of keeping key players such as Höjbjerg, Rabiot, Greenwood, Balerdi and Rowe, even those who were not incumbents, to build a competitive team. He praised his players’ professional attitude to the interest of other clubs in these elements, stressing their commitment to the Marseille project. In addition, the club welcomed the arrivals of CJ Egan-Riley and Angel Gomes, considered “leaders” by sports director Médi Benatia, as well as central defender Medina, a strategic recruitment to strengthen defence.
In parallel to these movements, OM announced the postponement of the arrival of Pierre-Emérik Aubameyang, originally scheduled for 22 July. This logistical setback, although disappointing for the mobilized supporters, does not seem to compromise the player’s signature, which should sign a two-year contract with an option for an additional season. This recruit is seen as an important offensive reinforcement for the team, complementing a force in the midst of reconstruction. However, the defensive record remains complex, with West Ham’s decision to retain Nayef Aguerd holding back a transfer desired by OM.
Despite these challenges, OM continues its mercato cautiously, relying on new recruits to strengthen its workforce before the start of the Ligue 1 season. The club remains attentive to opportunities, while maintaining a firm position and avoiding the pressure of other clubs interested in its players. The arrival of Aubameyang, as well as the strengthening of defence with Egan-Riley and Medina, testify to De Zerbi’s willingness to build a competitive and strong team for the coming season. However, the need for an axial defence leader remains a priority for the Marseille club.
