Financial crisis in French football: negotiations blocked and broadcast maintained

The recent attempts to mediate between the Professional Football League and DAZN have unfortunately not been successful, leaving the French Football Federation (FFF) facing a worrying situation. FFF President Philippe Diallo expressed his strong desire to see the dialogue resumed between the two parties, stressing the need to preserve the financial stability of professional clubs. At a press conference following a meeting of the FFF Executive Committee, he stressed the urgency of finding a resolution, recalling that failure to meet DAZN’s payment deadlines, totalling EUR 140 million in April and June, could lead to serious financial difficulties for many clubs.

In the context of this crisis, Philippe Diallo tempered hopes for quick solutions, recognizing the complexity of the ongoing negotiations. He recalled that the agreement on television rights provided for a payment of 2.5% for amateur football, an essential sum for the development of this category. In order to promote a global vision of the sector, a meeting of professional clubs, referees and football doctors was scheduled for 12 May, in parallel with the next FFF Executive Council. The aim is to restore the image and credibility of professional football and design a federative project.

Despite the continuing tension between the League and DAZN, as legal proceedings are still ongoing and 573 million euros are still being demanded by the UK platform, the circulation of Ligue 1 matches will not be interrupted. A spokesperson for the Ligue said the LFP has its own broadcasting capabilities, allowing it to broadcast the meetings to any distributor. This ability ensures the continuity of the broadcast, even in the absence of agreement with DAZN, and excludes any possibility of interruption of the broadcast of the games.
