Disciplinary reform LFP automatic suspension for yellow cards

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) announced a significant change in its disciplinary rules, effective for the 2025/2026 season. This new measure concerns automatic suspensions of players and is the result of a reflection work initiated last March by the LFP Board of Directors, in collaboration with the bodies of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 BKT. The main objective of this reform is to improve discipline and to limit gambling interruptions.

The key change is the introduction of an automatic suspension for any player accumulating five yellow cards during a season. This suspension will apply to the next game, regardless of the 10-game period previously in effect. This reform, adopted on 3 June 2025, will apply to all national competitions, including Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Coupe de France and Trophรฉe des Champions.

According to a spokesperson for the LFP, this simplified rule aims to strengthen discipline and reduce gambling interruptions. This could have a significant impact on staff management, particularly for clubs such as Olympique de Marseille (OM), which have several regularly informed players such as Lรฉo Balerdi, Amir Murillo, and Facundo Medina. These clubs will therefore have to exercise more caution in the management of yellow cards in order to avoid automatic suspensions.
