Olympic Lyonnais financial and sports restructuring

The partnership between Olympique Lyonnais (OL) and Groupama has been renewed for the naming of the stadium, the Groupama Stadium, until August 1. This decision, confirmed by an internal source at the club, ensures a significant financial continuity for OL, with an annual revenue of approximately โ‚ฌ6.9 million generated by this contract since 2017. This news is part of a major change within the team, with Lucas Perri’s imminent departure to Leeds United, an operation estimated at 16 million euros that will strengthen the club’s finances. In addition, several former OL reserve players joined other clubs, including Lille and Metz, marking a new stage in their careers.

The transfer of Thiago Almada from Atletico Madrid to OL will not be realized, as the 21 million euros not benefiting the Lyon club but to Botafogo, its former club. This situation is linked to the separation of the Eagle Football Group. At the same time, the departure of Maliick Fofana has been envisaged since the start of the mercato, forming part of a list of players likely to leave the club. His departure could be in August. These player movements reflect a restructuring of OL’s workforce, potentially aimed at reducing costs and freeing up financial resources.

OL are also preparing for next season with a new Champions League format, including a ranking phase with 18 clubs. The club currently ranked 42nd in the UEFA rankings, with 43,750 points, ranking as the third French team behind the PSG and Lille. Although OL are not qualified for the Champions League, a good performance in the Europa League could improve its UEFA coefficient and ensure a future qualification. However, the club will lose 25,000 points after the 2025-2026 season, which may limit its chances of maintaining a high UEFA coefficient in the long term.
