The College of Presidents of Ligue 1 met last Tuesday to formalize the decision to terminate the contract that binds it to DAZN, starting from the end of the current sports season. Following a mediation period, the financial proposal submitted to the broadcaster in order to endorse this early break did not find agreement. This offer, which provided for the payment of an estimated break-up payment of between EUR 110 million and EUR 125 million, in addition to the two payments already due this season, did not receive a favourable response from the British platform, thus putting an end to the discussions.
Along with this crucial decision, Vincent Labrune, president of the LFP, was able to attend a Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa. This sporting event coincided with several remote meetings concerning the future of Ligue 1 and its broadcast. The impasse in the negotiation with DAZN, which was already held by the Ligue 1 College and the LFP Board of Directors, raises questions about the broadcaster’s ability to honour its financial commitments, including the final payment scheduled for June 30th.
In the face of this situation, the LFP is now studying the creation of an internal chain, a project initially led by the Olympique Lyonnais last summer, but which had not been successful. A new meeting is planned on 30 April to ensure the execution of DAZN’s payment, leaving the uncertainty about the future of Ligue 1 broadcasting and the need to find a viable solution to ensure the sustainability of this project.
