The AC Milan, despite a difficult season in Serie A, created the sensation by eliminating the Inter Milan (3-0) in the semifinal return of the Italian Cup. Benjamin Pavard and his teammates ended the club’s ambitions to see a triple this year. AC Milan, which was in ninth place before the game, was held in check in the home game (1-1) and was largely dominated during the first thirty minutes of the game last Wednesday. However, it was the Inter Milan who cracked first despite his power advantage with the absences of Pavard, Acerbi, Sommer and Calhanoglu on the bench. Luka Jovic, a real comeback, opened the mark on a centre of Santiago Gimenez (36’) before recidivating in the second period (50’) on a stopped kick, sowing panic among the Nerazzurri. Tactical changes and entries failed to reverse the course of the game, during which AC Milan was effective in counter-attack. Porter Mike Maignan, however, had to make a spectacular stop on a lead by Stefan de Vrij (68’) while Rafael Leao turned into a decisive passer for the third goal scored by Tijjani Reijnders (85’). The Inter Milan, leader of Serie A and qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League, was defeated (0-3) and deprived of tripling, as had been the case in 2010. Despite the difficulties encountered this season, AC Milan did not lose a single duel with its big rival (3 wins, 2 draws in five games: twice in Serie A, twice in the Cup, once in Supercup). In an attempt to win his sixth Italian Cup and the first since 2003, the Lombardy team will have to beat Bologna or Empoli in the final on 14 May at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Bologna already has a foot in the final after having largely won the go game (0-3).
