The sky fell on their heads. This Sunday was to be a day of celebration at the OL Park for the semi-final return of Champions League. The OL players thought they had done the hardest in winning 2-1 in London the previous week, with a small but sufficient advantage to achieve a 12th European final in their history. However, the party turned into a nightmare against Arsenal, who won the 4-1 score and thus eliminated the Lyons.
FC Barcelona had already picked up its ticket to Lisbon a little earlier in the afternoon, and everyone was hoping for a revenge from the last final in Bilbao. Unfortunately, OL was disappointed with their audience. One could fear that Arsenal would attack this beating drum match to quickly put the two matches back on a tie, and that’s exactly what happened. On a corner, Christiane Endler was wrong about her exit and scored against her back camp from the 4th minute.
The London fans present at OL Park must have been delighted with these promising debuts for their team, but for the Fenottes, it was the beginning of a late afternoon nightmare. Joe Montemurro had chosen to bring Dumornay down a cranium and align Ada Hegerberg to the forefront, but this strategy was not paid for. The Lyonnaises were ineffective and were led by individual mistakes, such as that of Vanessa Gilles who was clearly not on his plate.
Marion Paolini took the break for Arsenal shortly before the break, and it was not Russo’s goal, a minute after the changing rooms returned, that made things easier for the Lyonnais. With two goals to fill to hope for the extension, OL was crucified by Foord just after the game time (0-4, 63rd). Arsenal seems to be in his element at Parc OL, and Dumornay’s goal ten minutes from the end has not changed much. Joe Montemurro’s players thus exit through the small door of this Champions League.
