ASSE-OL: An epic and haunting derby

Saint-Étienne and Lyon pass in an epic derby

The last Ligue 1 match of the 2023-2024 season offered an exceptional show between L’ASSE and L’OL, in the heart of the legendary Chaudron. Despite fierce resistance from the Greens, the Lyons won the derby with a 1-1 parity score.

LASSE, who had failed to win in Ligue 1 for eight days, struggled hard to avoid defeat. The Greens even managed to return three times to the score, demonstrating their determination not to give in to the opponent.

The game started on the wheel hats, with frank occasions on both sides. Wahbi Khazri first saw his strike pushed back by Lopes, then his head hit the pole. Lyon reacted with Paqueta, but the Brazilian player failed to score in two steps. Khazri then opened the score, before the referee canceled the goal for a light off-game.

OL took the lead in the 42nd minute thanks to Xherdan Shaqiri, but the VAR cancelled the goal for a Paqueta out-game. In the second period, the Greens continued to grow and Mahdi Camara equalized. The situation deteriorated at the end of the game, when François Letexier expelled Anthony Lopes after the VAR reported an out-of-game. On the free move that followed, Boudebouz found Lucas Gourna, but his recovery crashed on the bar.

At the last minute, Khazri transformed a penalty, pulling out a valuable point for theASSE. The Greens, despite their defeat, can boast of having made a heroic match and getting a little closer to the area of relegation. The ASSE ends the season at the bottom of the standings with four points on the counter.
