Nico Gaitán: Close career or pause reflection?

Nico Gaitán, aged 37, left Sarmiento without making a statement. This decision follows on from his coach’s comments and his reflection on the advance of his age, suggesting a close end to his career. While some like René Girard are categorical on this subject, others prefer to wait and see coming, such as Adil Rami or Nico Gaitán himself.

The player, who moved to LOSC between January and August 2020 (4 matches for a total of 50 minutes), has moved away from the world of football since last winter without officially announcing anything. However, he has not been recruited by a new club since then.

On 20 July 2024, Nico Gaitán joined Sarmiento Junin, a bet for this club that was fighting for its 18th-placed maintain in Argentina. After 16 games, one achievement and two assists, his mission was accomplished. However, he was no longer present at the beginning of the following season.

A former player from Boca Juniors, Benfica Lisbon and LOSC, Gaitán could end his career. A clause in his contract allowed him to leave Sarmiento if he decided to stop football or join another course, subject to financial compensation.

His coach, Javier Sanguinetti, said a few weeks later in the local press: “We allowed Gaitán to return to the world of football and we made an important investment because he was a player who had stopped playing. We had great expectations of him, and finally he played very well… Nico informed us that he was going to stop football because his family had gone to Buenos Aires. He sent a telegram indicating he would not continue. But if he signs in another club, financial compensation will be needed for Sarmiento.”

For several months, Nico Gaitán has not turned back and has not returned to the field despite his 37th birthday. Did the former Dogue really end his football career? Only time and possible news will tell us.
