Doucet critique Textor and Kang takes control of OL

In an interview with L’Équipe, the Mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, took a position on the economic situation of Olympique Lyonnais (OL) and made a virulent criticism of John Textor, former club leader. He stressed OL’s financial fragility, exacerbated by the Covid crisis and the difficulties of football broadcasters, while stressing Textor’s personal responsibility in the crisis. Doucet welcomed Michelle Kang, who took over, and highlighted her collaborative and transparent approach to managing the club. He also mentioned the possibility of an imminent start of Textor of the Eagle Football group.

John Textor’s situation in the Eagle Football group now seems to be compromised. After previous difficulties and a growing challenge to his influence, he is likely to be dismissed from the OL Presidency. Michelle Kang, a new executive, claims to have full operational control over both entities, Eagle Football Group and OL, and no one can influence her decisions. To permanently eliminate Textor, the Lyon club will rely on Christoper Mallon, a discreet but key figure in the rationalisation of OL finances. Various options are being considered, ranging from a negotiated arrangement to a complete takeover, to force him to leave the club.

At the same time, Thiago Almada’s adventure with OL ended earlier than expected. Despite the initial ambitions to retain him as the successor of Rayaan Cherki, the club was unable to overcome the economic difficulties and had to give him over to the Atlético de Madrid. The Argentinean player signed a contract until June 2030, for an estimated €21 million for 50% of his economic rights. The impact of this transfer on OL finances remains uncertain.
