Derby Stéphanois: Tumultuous Victory of the Greens

The Stéphanois Derby Wounded by a Serious Incident: Les Verts Triomphent de l’Olympique Lyonnais

Saint-Étienne won a precious victory against his historic rival, Olympique Lyonnais, in the 30th championship match. The wait for a passionate Derby was broken by a serious incident that marked the evening.

The score opened in the 44th minute thanks to a masterly head of Lucas Stassin. However, the party quickly turned into chaos when one of the assistant referees was hit by a projectile launched from the northern rostrum of Geoffroy Guichard Stadium.

Following this incident, the game was interrupted for almost 45 minutes. A crisis cell was activated to manage the situation. The game resumed, first to finish the first period, then for the whole of the second.

The second period saw the Greens take control. Lucas Stassin scored a double, scoring the 67th minute to bring his score to two. Despite Tanner Tessmann’s good hit in the 76th minute that narrowed the gap, Olympique Lyonnais failed to reverse the situation.

The 2-1 victory is a valuable boost for the ASSE in its fight for League 1 retention. It completely revives the debates at the bottom of the ranking. For OL, this is a very bad operation in the qualifying race for the Champions League.
