Veretout's uncertain future and the profound changes of OL

Jordan Veretout’s future at Olympique Lyonnais is uncertain, despite his imminent departure for Qatar. Initially planned to join Al-Arabi, the 32-year-old midfielder sees his transfer blocked by a financial disagreement between the two clubs. OL, under pressure of financial recovery by the DNACG, refused to give up Veretout without compensation, while the club could benefit from the sale of its players to improve its economic situation. This situation occurs while OL, relegated to Ligue 2 at first instance, tries to appeal this decision to the FFF.

At the same time, Olympique Lyonnais is undergoing a period of profound change. John Textor, the new majority shareholder, succeeds Jean-Michel Aulas and implements a policy of austerity aimed at reducing the wage bill. This policy led to coaching changes and financial difficulties, culminating in the club’s administrative relegation to Ligue 2. In spite of this situation, OL obtained a UEFA authorisation to participate in the Europa League, provided that they found Ligue 1.

On Wednesday 9 July, OL will be examined by the FFF Appeal Board in an attempt to return to Ligue 1. If this attempt fails, the club could refer the matter to the administrative court, but would then lose any hope of participating in the Europa League. The arrival of Michele Kang as President and Michael Gerlinger as Managing Director marks a new chapter for OL, which seeks to overcome its financial and sporting difficulties in order to regain its position as leader in France.
