The Lyon club announced the arrival of Domiink Greif, a Slovak goaltender, for four seasons, until 2029. This transfer, estimated at EUR 4 million, includes an interesting financial clause for the previous club, Mallorca, with a potential bonus of EUR 1.25 million and a 15% stake in any future capital gains. Greif’s arrival was seen as a strategic bet by Paulo Fonseca, OL coach, who had already targeted the player’s profile following the departure of Lucas Perri in Leeds United. The goaltender, measuring 1m97, has a physics similar to Perri’s and is known for his rapid reflexes.
Although Domiink Greif’s recent statistics are not exceptional, OL highlights Majorca’s defensive strength, where he played 32 games last season, earning 37 goals while maintaining 7 clean sheets. His previous coach even favoured other guards for the important confrontations against Barcelona and Real Madrid. Arriving in Spain in 2021, Greif was initially a replacement, playing only a few games of Liga and Coupe du Roi, although he was involved in the epic of Majorca in Copa del Rey.
Despite his experience, Greif received only five selections in the Slovak national team, and has not been called since 2020, due to a period of inactivity in his early years in Majorca. His arrival in Lyon could therefore lead to an increased competition for the goaltender position, notably for Rémy Descamps, who made an excellent impression in the last game. Greif’s arrival does not make him an undisputed taulier, and the Lyon staff will have to manage this competition to ensure the stability of the position.
