Textoor plans to buy Sheffield Wednesday while Ligue 1 unveils Ligue 1+

After leaving Crystal Palace and being removed from Olympique Lyonnais (OL), John Textor, an American businessman known for his unpredictable movements, is seriously considering buying the Sheffield Wednesday, an English club playing in Championship. Textor believes that this historic club is not at its fair value and that it deserves to fight for the title every year, a feeling he has publicly expressed. This ambition of redemption comes when Textor initially intended to concentrate on his Brazilian club, the Botafogo, but this decision lasted only a few days. The Sheffield Wednesday, second in the Championship last season, is currently going through a difficult period due to a recruitment ban until 2027, due to wage payment problems.

Along with these developments, the French Football League has unveiled its new broadcaster for the upcoming season, called Ligue 1+, which will be launched on August 15. This platform, which will take over DAZN slots, will feature eight out of nine matches, including Friday evening matches, two Saturday matches, five Sunday games, as well as special shows after Saturday evening matches and Sunday games. The subscription for the general public will be offered at 14,99 euros per month, or 19,99 euros without commitment, with the possibility to use two screens per fireplace. A reduced fee of EUR 9.99 will be available for children under 26 years of age.

Ligue 1+ will be distributed via several platforms, including Free, Orange TV, Bouygues Telecom, SFR and DAZN, as well as via the OTT platforms. The new channel aims to reach a million subscribers in its first season, an ambitious goal given the difficulties encountered by its predecessors. The lack of support from Canal+ to support this new broadcaster represents an additional challenge. The outcome of John Textor’s takeover of Sheffield Wednesday remains uncertain, but this potential acquisition demonstrates his desire to revitalize English football.
