Sassuolo: fulgurant climb and ambition to maintain in Serie A

Founded in 1920, the Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio has had a sporting history marked by periods of fluctuations between the Serie D and the Serie C. Thanks to the support of the MAPEI group, the club Emilien-Romagnol has experienced a staggering rise, reaching the Serie B in 2008 and, for the first time in its existence, the Serie A in 2013. This progression continued with participation in the Europa League during the 2016-17 season. After a relegation to Serie B following the 2023-24 season, the club, nicknamed the Neroverdi in reference to its colours, managed an immediate recovery in Serie Last season, under the direction of Fabio Grosso, former Italian national team player and world champion in 2006.

For the new season, Sassuolo’s main goal is to maintain his place in Serie A. The summer mercato was marked by the arrival of key players, including Armand Laurienité, midfield defender elected best player in the Serie B with 18 goals, whose transfer from Marseille to Sunderland finally failed. Ismaël Koné, a former midfielder from Marseille, was loaned with option of purchase, as was Norwegian legal defender Pedersen of Feyenoord Rotterdam. These reinforcements are in addition to the strength to strengthen the team for the competition.

Sassuolo’s preparation for the new season began on 8 July with the resumption of the training, followed by an internship in Trento, in north-eastern Italy, from 11 to 28 July. During this period, the team made several friendly matches, with various results: a 5-0 win over Real Vicenza, a 1-1 draw against FC SüdTirol, a 2-1 defeat against Bologna and a 0-0 draw against Empoli. The calendar of the season will be busy, with a participation in the Italian Cup against Catanzaro on 15 August, followed by the start of the Italian Championship on 23 August with a home match against Naples.
