The current situation of French football is marked by a major crisis concerning television rights, involving the broadcaster DAZN and the Ligue Professionnel de Football (LFP). This financial disagreement, where DAZN refuses to pay some of the sums owed, seriously undermines the economic balance of national football and places the LFP in a delicate position. At the heart of this turmoil, LFP President Vincent Labrune is exposed to sharp criticism, exacerbated by his remarkable presence in Birmingham to attend the quarter final of Champions League between PSG and Aston Villa, a choice perceived as inappropriate given the importance of the ongoing negotiations.
The acerbic intervention of former international Eric Di Meco, during the program “Super Moscato Show” on RMC, crystallized the general outrage. Di Meco strongly criticized Labrune for favoring a symbolic presence in England while the fate of French football is at stake. This criticism is part of a continuing suspicion about the links between Labrune and Nasser Al-Khelaรฏfi, president of the PSG, which had already led to public justifications on the part of the president of the LFP last February, denying any subordination to Qatari influence.
Faced with this impasse, the LFP is considering radical solutions, including breaking the contract with DAZN and creating a clean chain. The absence of Labrune during the crucial negotiations and his presence in the PSG match have generated a feeling of disapproval among many French football players, fuelling questions about his priorities and the management of this major crisis that threatens the future of the League 1.
