Sage and Lyon a first chapter full of history and issues

Pierre Sage, the new RC Lens coach, has been following the economic situation of Olympique Lyonnais for several weeks. His first match in Ligue 1, against Lyon, was particularly important, as that was where he started his coaching career. This meeting would not have taken place if OL had not been demoted to Ligue 2 by the DNACG, a situation which had caused him deep concern for the future of the club. Sage expressed concern for the well-being of players, staff and supporters, stressing the importance of preserving a club with a history and influence such as Lyon. He stressed the need to protect the French football “product”, especially in a context where the country had to defend its position in European competitions and value its TV rights.

At the same time, Olympique Lyonnais is undergoing a period of change within its team of guards. Mathieu Patouillet, currently second guard, could leave the club soon, due to the competition and refusal to extend his contract expiring in 2026. OL are still waiting for Dominik Greif’s signature, which should become the number one guard. This situation could pave the way for a start for Patouillet, which would be of interest to several clubs, including the Red Star.

The meeting between Lens and Lyon, scheduled for 16 August 2025, is therefore charged with emotion for Pierre Sage. This is a return to the sources, marked by the recognition of the importance of the Lyon club and the willingness to contribute to its sustainability. This meeting takes place in a context of transition for both teams, with different issues but a common desire for success. OL’s future, particularly with regard to its defence and the management of its staff, remains a focus for supporters and observers of French football.
