DAZN leaves League 1: LFP launches its own channel

DAZN will terminate its Ligue 1 broadcast contract with the LFP at the end of the current season. The British platform had acquired rights for eight of the nine posters per day for an annual amount of 375 million euros until 2029, but after a season marked by financial tensions and disappointing audiences, it agreed to contribute 100 million euros to the LFP to break the agreement. DAZN is also committed to honouring the last two maturities of the current season for an additional EUR 140 million.

The likely release of DAZN opens the way to a 100% Ligue 1 channel. The LFP can now think about managing its broadcasting rights and wants to launch its own channel entirely dedicated to Ligue 1 next season. The goal is to regain control of broadcasting, maximize revenues and provide a unified experience for fans. Several scenarios are under consideration, including a partnership with a third party for the production and distribution of the chain.

The decision will be presented to the PSL Board on Friday, May 2. Nicolas de Tavernost, appointed a few days ago to the management of LFP Media, will also have five weeks to conduct discussions with all market players, including DAZN, in order to identify the best solution for the future channel 100% Ligue 1. The next few weeks will be decisive in selecting partners and finalizing the project.

If the chain bet 100% Ligue 1 carries financial risks, it could also mark the beginning of a new era for French football, more autonomous and closer to its fans.
