Julien Stéphan, former coach of Stade Rennais, gave his analysis of the course and potential of Amine Gouiri during an interview given to L’Équipe. While some observers criticize Gouiri’s inconstancy, Stephan nuances these remarks by highlighting the undeniable technical qualities of the player he led during the 2023-2024 season.
Gouiri stood out last Sunday against Brest with a marked triple. However, some observers sometimes blame him for some nonchalance on the ground. Stephan wants to clarify this point: “I would not say that he is nonchalant, quite the contrary. He is very involved in his profession, he stays long after the session to make his recovery and he is very invested, with a personal cook”. These comments highlight Gouiri’s professionalism, often underestimated because of his attitude on the ground.
According to Stephan, Gouiri is now at a key moment in his career, ready to take a course. “Sometimes we have to go through some stages and he was Dad in Rennes. He’s a real pro,” he says. This personal evolution, coupled with a structured work environment, could allow it to stabilize sportfully.
Despite his unquestionable qualities, including an excellent first touch and a technical palette above average, Gouiri has not yet fully met the expectations placed in him. “He’s been inconstant for a few years. With such technical faculties, such a quality of first touch, we are still waiting for it to be decisive on a regular basis,” explains Stephan.
For the coach, the real challenge for Gouiri remains regularity. “Amine has always had the talent but he has not optimized this potential. The challenge will be regularity and the ability to be impacting at the European Cup matches, which are a revealing.” At 25, Gouiri seems to be entering a pivotal period. Its future course will depend on its ability to consistently impose itself, especially in the major European meetings, where the eyes turn to those able to make a difference.
