Aubameyaang back OM betting risky or strategic opportunity

Florent Gautreau, RMC consultant, expressed his reservations about Pierre-Emérik Aubameyang’s return to the Olympique de Marseille. Although he understands the enthusiasm that surrounds him, he points out that feedback from executives does not always guarantee success. Gautreau recalls that similar operations, such as those involving Pogba or Giroud, have sometimes disappointed, despite the players’ roster. He insists on the need for careful analysis and warns against the expectation of a miraculous return, especially for an OM team that aims to make long-term progress and qualify for the Champions League.

The consultant believes that OM should focus on profiles such as Malik Fofanà, which are more consistent with a global progression strategy. He points out that the returns of former players are often unsuccessful, twice out of three. Although it recognizes that the return of Aubameyang could be beneficial in the context of a rotation strategy, where it would bring its experience and temperament, Gautreau doubts that this is the best option available in the market. He stressed that the opportunity was rarely as favourable in a second passage.

Gautreau envisages a positive scenario only if Aubameyang accepts a secondary role, as a rotation player. He acknowledged that, in the current context and taking into account the options available, this could be an opportunity, although it was not certain that this was the most appropriate for OM. He insists that the club must think about its long-term progress, both in the field and in its recruitment policy, and that the return of an iconic player should not hide this ambition.
