Saint-Maximin tells of his arduous passage to Saint-Étienne

In a recent interview with the Lyon streamer Zack Nan, Allan Saint-Maximin spoke of his difficult transition to AS Saint-Étienne. It describes a hostile reception on the part of professionals, accentuated by an ultimatum concerning the signature with a specific agent. Saint-Maximin explains that he was immediately labelled as a “bad boy” following his expulsion from Clairefontaine, an image he contests. He stressed that he did not lack respect for the oldest and that he was simply reacting to a lack of respect himself. This preconceived label complicated its integration and created a priori among educators, who struggled to perceive it as a respectful and calm person.

Saint-Maximin insists on the importance of mutual respect, affirming that he is always willing to give it if he receives it. However, he acknowledged that his early career in Saint-Étienne had been complicated by this initial lack of respect. He nevertheless developed strong ties with educators and was part of a talented generation, although few of his teammates managed to break through. Living away from his family was particularly difficult, but he was motivated by a desire to succeed, given his previous experience. He had to overcome obstacles and resistance from some who did not like him, which made his progress more arduous.

He reveals that his first training with professionals was difficult, because his style of play, based on dribble and provocation, was not appreciated. He did not want to distort his game and keep his player identity. His “bad boy” label was interpreted as arrogance, while he simply claimed to want to have fun and give the best of himself. He had to fight for opportunities and was helped by some coaches, such as Abdel Bouhazam. The ultimatum concerning signing with an agent was a particularly painful moment, as it felt betrayed and exploited. This situation motivated him to prove his worth by his own means, and his performance in the CFA and in the French team finally allowed him to sign in Monaco.
