The new management of Olympique Lyonnais, under the presidency of Michele Kang and the general management of Michael Gerlinger, succeeded in winning a master’s degree in obtaining the club’s retention in Ligue 1. This success is based on a strategy of financial discipline and budgetary adjustment, implemented following a first unfavourable hearing before the DNCG (National Directorate of Management Control). The club submitted a budget accepted by the DNCG, committing itself not to exceed the figures set by the financial gendarme of French football. This approach, described by Gerlinger as a “financial discipline plan”, involves a constant analysis of the impact of the funds received and a willingness to remain competitive through planned player sales. The main objective remains the European qualification, and the club plans to find ways to fight for this goal.
Michele Kang’s approach and his team was facilitated by the support of several key players. Kang expressed gratitude to Jean-Marc Mickeler, President of the DNCG, for his explanation of the rules and his availability. She also stressed the importance of Thierry Sauvage’s ongoing board, former general manager of OL. Despite Jean-Michel Aulas’ support, he was unable to intervene directly because of his current role as FFF Vice-President. Kang insisted on his total control of the Eagle Football Group and OL SA, promising transparency and compliance. She also avoided mentioning John Textorf, her predecessor, and focused on the future of the club.
The decision of the DNCG to maintain OL in Ligue 1 was the result of an intense effort between 24 June and 9 July. Michele Kang managed to mobilize the necessary funds, thanks to personal contributions and additional liquidity from lenders like Ares. This strategy was based on sufficient cash flow, reinforced by guarantees to avoid a possible deficit. The agreement with the DNCG provides for the payment of fines in case of non-compliance with financial objectives, but also the possibility of a stay if these objectives are achieved. This success paves the way for a new season in League 1, with the promise of financial discipline and transparency on the part of the new management.
