Facundo Medina commits to the Olympique de Marseille to strengthen defence

Facundo Medina, the third summer recruit of the Olympique de Marseille, was officially presented to the press this Wednesday. Arriving from RC Lens after five seasons, Argentine international defender (27 years old) expressed the reasons for his choice to join the Phocéan city. He stressed that the overall project of the club, the commitment of the staff and the confidence they place in this project were important motivations. In addition, the opening of the group and the dream of participating in the World Cup also played a role in its decision. Medina stressed the importance of OM’s sports project, which convinced him from the first discussions with the Marseilles management.

The player recognized the importance of his connection to his compatriot Leonardo Balerdi, but was especially seduced by the club’s ambition and the involvement of his entourage. Its arrival is part of Roberto De Zerbi’s desire to strengthen the defensive sector with technical and combustible profiles. Linked to OM until 2029, Medina also evoked the fervour that surrounds the club and its impatience to discover the atmosphere of the Vélodrome. He emphasized the quality of Marseille fans, comparing this passion to that he experienced in Argentina, and promised to give the best of himself on the ground.

This transfer, estimated at around 22 million euros, enables Olympique de Marseille to strengthen its defence in the midst of reconstruction. Medina’s experience in Ligue 1, his combativity and his left profile should facilitate his integration into the 11th start. Just a few months away from the 2026 World Cup, the Argentinian ambition is to win in Marseilles and score points with the selector Lionel Scaloni. By joining a club as exposed as OM, Medina faces a major challenge, between popular pressure, the demand for results and the consuming passion of fans.
