New suspension rule for yellow cartons in France

The Fédération Française de Football (FFF), via its Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), has changed the automatic suspension rule for the accumulation of yellow cards. This decision, based on a thorough reflection, is based on the practices already in place in the foreign championships. The old rule, applied until the end of the previous season, provided for an automatic suspension of a match for a player or staff member receiving three yellow cards over a period of ten matches. This practice was well known, particularly within the Monaco club.

Starting next season, the rule changes significantly. The new provision states that an automatic suspension of a game will be applied as soon as five yellow cards are collected, regardless of the 10-game period previously used. This amendment will apply to all French national competitions, ensuring uniformity in the application of the sanction.

It is important to note that yellow card accounts have been reset for the start of the coming season. This reset allows all players and staff members to start the season without penalty from the previous season. The LFP communicated this change via its official website, highlighting the federation’s commitment to modernising and harmonizing the disciplinary rules of French football.
