The group of London fans of Olympique Lyonnais, the Lyondoners, was born a decade ago and consolidated over the years, establishing itself as a regular core of enthusiasts following the team across Europe. Motivated by a strong commitment to OL, these expatriate fans have always had a vocation to travel and support their club abroad, their dedication intensifying at major events such as the semi-final of the Champions League. The announcement of the match against Manchester United naturally aroused great enthusiasm, and the group plans a series of events, including a midday meeting in Manchester, as well as support for women’s and youth teams, stressing the importance of the academy and the “young pushes” for the club’s identity. The group aspires to increase its visibility through English-language media coverage and welcomes the interest of the owner, John Textor, for teams and supporters.
The establishment and sustainability of the group is a constant challenge, including the search for a fixed place, such as the bar “Trois Lanternes” in Piccadilly Circus, for gatherings and the maintenance of a lasting involvement of members, an obstacle exacerbated by the consequences of Brexit. Despite these difficulties, the Lyondoners maintained a close link with the club, benefiting from regular follow-up by Olympique Lyonnais, and aspired to become a model for other groups of fans abroad, an initiative inspired by Fred. The group, which transcends simple football, plans to celebrate its ten years at a major meeting in Lyon in August.
Before the match against Manchester United, the Lyondoners sent a message of encouragement to the team, stressing the importance of giving the best of itself from start to finish in what is like a crucial stage in the club’s quest. The group is mobilising for the occasion, with more than one hundred fans expected in Manchester, about twenty in Arsenal and Fulham, and the hope of seeing the players and the fans collectively surpass.
