Manchester United goaltender André Oanana’s week was marked by growing controversy and disappointing sporting performance. It all started with a bold declaration by the doorman, affirming the superiority of his team over the Olympique Lyonnais, which provoked a strong reaction from the former Lyon player, Nemanja Matic, who called him “worst guardian of Manchester United’s history”. Tension increased when Oanana responded by pointing out that he had at least won a trophy with the club, fuelling debate and criticism of him.
This harmful climate resulted in a hostile reception of the public during the game go to Lyon, where the guard was copiously booed. His field performance did not ease tensions, as he was directly responsible for two Lyon goals. On the first, he was slow to react to a free shot by Thiago Almada, allowing the ball to stay in his goal. On the second, he inadvertently repelled a shot by Georges Mikautadze, giving Rayan Cherki the opportunity to equalize and allowing Olympique Lyonnais to get a draw (2-2) in the quarter-final go of Ligue Europa.
Despite the attempts of his coach, Ruben Amorim, who defended himself by highlighting his own mistakes, André Oanana’s confidence seems to be compromised. Manchester United players are aware of this fragility, which could prove decisive before the game returns to Old Trafford next week. The team will have to overcome this difficult context to hope to win the semifinal qualification of the European competition.
